300 km from Muscat lies the ancient port of the Sultatanate, Sur. This fisherman's town is renowned for its ship building industry.
The Dhow building Yard is a must see place in this region. Dhows are traditional fishing boats. Models of various ships can be seen at the Maritime Museum located here.
Sur is also known as a fortified town. Many castles and forts stands pompously overlooking the town. Sinayslah Castle and the Bilad Sur Castle are the main forts in Sur.
In recent times Sur is famous for breeding rare species of turtles, which also attracts a huge number of tourist.
