Description

Discover the Grand Canyon of Oman on a 2-day tour from Muscat. Visit the Nizwa Market, explore the Nizwa Fortress, and see the Misfat Al Abreyeen village. Spend the night at a resort in Jabal Shams. The next day, trek along the W6 path and visit Jabreen Castle. On the first day, leave Muscat and head to Nizwa, the old capital of Oman. Visit the Nizwa Market (Souq) and see a wide variety of vendors offering their goods in the streets of the souk. Find vegetables, pottery, jewelry, handicrafts, Omani sweets (Halwa), dates, spice, and souvenirs. Next to the Souq is Nizwa Fortress, which is now a museum. Walk around in this impressive fortress and visit its many rooms, passages, and towers. The fort is an architectural testimony to the economic and military achievements of the early Yaruba dynasty from the mid-17th century. From Nizwa, head to the Misfat Al Abreyeen village, a picturesque village on a steep slope at the foot of Jebel Shams. Walk around the village and see its Falaj system that supplies water for many orchards, date palms, and vegetable gardens. Drive up to Jebel Shams Mountain (Grand Canyon), 3009 meters high. This mountain is one of the most adventurous mountains in Oman, offering an existing off-road experience and fantastic views. Reach the canyon view which is 2000 meters high and stop there to enjoy the view and take photos. Continue to the resort where you will spend the night. The next day, trek along the W6 path that takes approximately 4 hours walking. The Canyon edge offers spectacular views into the several wades and stunning valleys below. Drive down the mountain to visit Jabreen Castle, which was originally designed as a presidential palace in 1670 by the Balarab bin Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'arubi Dynasty. An extensive renovation was carried out in 1984. The interior includes various furniture and traditional utensils to provide visitors with a taste of the period castle lifestyle. The building itself is decorated with elaborate wood carvings, ceiling paintings, and stucco work. After visiting the castle, drive back to Muscat.

• The trekking in W6 path requires a moderate level of fitness. The overnight stay is at a high altitude; guests should be prepared for cooler temperatures. Visiting the Nizwa Market is best experienced on a Friday due to the cattle market. The drive up to Jebel Shams offers off-road experience; guests should be comfortable with this. The visit to Jabreen Castle includes exploring historical interiors and architecture.
