Probably one of the best fish meals I’ve ever had BUT NOTE THE NEW LOCATION! The seafront building in various photos has been demolished and they have moved to a (possibly) temporary location for a year or so. I think they hope to move back (inshallah) in a year or so. The current correct location IS AS SHOWN on Google maps - on a main road nearer to the bay/lagoon, nowhere near the coast. BUT THE FOOD was fantastic- the guy (he may have been the chef too) showed a book of fish and explained which were available. Between two of us we had a sherry/sheri fish, a portion of three tuna pieces, Omani rice, and a salad - more than enough to eat, tea, bottled water, 10.30 Rials total. The fish were dusted in a warming spicy mix, a tomatoey sauce on the side. Great fresh fish and lovely flavours. The restaurant is brightly lit with two areas to dine on the floor (probably separate male and female), plus a family room. We ate at the central table, which seated 8 people. Clean loos, a very warm welcome because we had phoned ahead to confirm the new location so they were waiting for us!
We were looking for a seafood restaurant to eat something fresh and this place was a great find. The service was very good, the food was excellent, and there was a wide selection. The fish was delicious, the prawns were amazing, and the hummus was absolutely heavenly. The salad and pitta bread were the perfect complement. We also had water and local cola, and the total bill came to only 10 rials - an amazing price. Highly recommended?
We had a lovely relaxing lunch without having any expectations. We were a little worried when we first walked in and were the only customers, but evidently we were just early because within 20mins the place was packed with locals and a couple of tables of tourists. The menu was based on the catch of the day - we just asked what they had (and after having been to the fish markets ourselves in the morning) ordered fried tuna. It was served with breads and a delicious salad and vegetable curry and we got four fresh juices and ate way too much with out being able to clear our plates. Although there we had no idea how much it would cost when we ordered, the bill came to a modest 16.500 OMR for four of us with the freshest tuna - we were overlooking the ocean and harbour where it had landed that morning. The staff were friendly and welcoming, as were the other locals. The soft sea breeze on the outdoor verandah looking over the ocean made for a memorable day in Sur.
Al Wajabat Al Suriyat is one of those rare places that reminds you not to judge a restaurant by its exterior. From the outside it looks simple and unassuming, but once the food arrives, everything changes. The flavors are outstanding, rich, authentic, and clearly made with experience and care. Every dish feels deeply rooted in local tradition, cooked the way it has been for years. This is not a trendy spot, it is an institution. If you want real Omani food in Sur, this place delivers every time. The quality, taste, and consistency make it a must visit despite its modest appearance. Truly one of those hidden gems that locals know and travelers are lucky to discover.
Very tasty food with fresh fish and seafood. Everything was well cooked and full of flavour. We really enjoyed the meal and would happily come back.
