Description
Discover Oman’s rich heritage and diverse environments on this multi-day trip. Experience desert adventures, traditional cuisine, historic fortresses, and coastal wildlife.
Day 1
Pickup is available anywhere in Muscat. Begin with a visit to Nakhl Fortress, a 350-year-old structure nestled among mountain foothills and date palm plantations. Tour the restored rooms and learn about its hidden escape routes and secret passages. Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and green plantations.
Next, drive through Wadi Bani Awf, passing scenic canyons and villages on a 1.5-hour journey before ascending the Jebel Shams Mountains on an off-road drive. The day ends with an overnight stay in Nizwa.
Day 2
Start early at Nizwa Souq, one of Oman’s largest traditional markets, open from 5:00 am to 10:00 am. Browse stalls offering fish, meat, vegetables, pottery, jewelry, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Fridays feature a lively cattle market selling donkeys, goats, cattle, sheep, and chickens.
Visit Nizwa Fortress, now a museum showcasing 17th-century Yaruba dynasty architecture with defensive traps and towers. In the afternoon, head to the Wahiba Sands desert for a 4x4 dune drive and desert camping. Watch the sunset from a dune, enjoy dinner at camp, and relax by the campfire before overnighting in tents.
Day 3
After breakfast in the desert camp, travel to Wadi Bani Khalid for swimming, sunbathing, and a picnic in one of Oman’s largest desert valleys. Continue to Sur for a brief city tour, then on to Ras al Hadd for accommodation.
In the evening, visit Ras Al Jinz Turtle Sanctuary. Take a night walk on the beach to observe nesting sea turtles and possibly hatching baby turtles.
Day 4
Visit Wadi Shab for a 45-minute hike through a canyon lined with palm trees. Swim through several clear water pools to a cave with a small waterfall illuminated by sunlight filtering through. Return to Muscat in the late afternoon.
