Begin your journey at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the most impressive religious structures in the Middle East. Admire the massive prayer hall with its intricate geometric design, one of the world’s largest hand-woven carpets, elegant chandeliers, and calligraphy. Continue to the Royal Opera House Muscat, a symbol of Oman’s modern cultural vision. Even from the outside, the architecture is striking: clean lines, white marble, and balanced proportions that reflect Omani design principles rather than flashy excess. Next, head to Mutrah, one of the oldest parts of Muscat. The Mutrah Corniche offers a scenic coastal drive with views of traditional dhows in the harbor, mountains rising directly from the sea, and colonial-era buildings. A visit to Muscat is incomplete without exploring Mutrah Souq, one of the oldest marketplaces in Oman. Unlike tourist-heavy markets elsewhere, this souq still serves locals. Inside, you’ll find frankincense, spices, traditional perfumes, silver jewelry, Omani khanjars, handcrafted souvenirs, and textiles. From Mutrah, head to Old Muscat, home to the Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial residence of His Majesty the Sultan. While entry is not permitted, the exterior is worth visiting. The palace is flanked by two Portuguese forts—Al Jalali and Al Mirani—dating back to the 16th century. Together, they tell the story of Muscat’s strategic importance in Indian Ocean trade routes. Perched high above the harbor, these forts once guarded Muscat from invaders. Although entry is restricted, viewing them from below gives you a sense of Oman’s defensive past and its interactions with global powers.
