Description
The Grand Mosque occupies a site of 416,000 m2 with the mosque complex covering 40,000 m2. Inaugurated by the Sultan of Oman on May 4, 2001, it features five minarets including the main minaret standing 90 meters tall. The square prayer hall measures 74.4 by 74.4 meters and has a central dome rising 50 meters above the floor, elaborately decorated inside. It accommodates over 6,500 worshippers.
After visiting the Grand Mosque, the tour drives through the ministries and embassies district and along Beach Street to visit the local fish and vegetable markets where fresh seafood is bought and sold by locals.
Next is Muttrah Souq, Oman’s largest and oldest traditional souq, located near Muscat’s harbor. Dating back two hundred years, the market’s narrow lanes and crowded stalls block sunlight, giving it its name which means 'darkness.' The souq extends from Al Lawatiya Mosque to Khour Bimba, featuring numerous stores and narrow alleys.
The tour continues to Bait Al Zubair Museum, which offers a detailed display of Omani culture, history, and information about the Royal Family.
Visitors then see Old Muscat, including Al Alam Palace. Built over 200 years ago under Imam Sultan bin Ahmed, it was reconstructed as the royal residence in 1972 with a gold and blue facade. While the palace grounds are off-limits to the public, photos can be taken from outside the gates. The palace hosts official events and distinguished guests.
The final stop is the Royal Opera House, commissioned by Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said and opened in 2011. It reflects contemporary Omani architecture and seats up to 1,100 guests. The complex includes a concert theater, auditorium, landscaped gardens, cultural market, luxury restaurants, and an arts center for musical and theatrical performances.
