The Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum is located in the grounds and main building of the Bait Al Falaj Fort in Muscat. The fort was built in 1845 to be used as a royal summer home but was used instead as the headquarters for the armed forces of Sultan Said bin Sultan.
Opened to the public in 1988, the museum houses an impressive collection of historic and present day military weapons such as antique cannons and early machine guns and replicas of military planes and vehicles. Other exhibits include instruments, uniforms and medals. The ejector seat makes fascinating viewing!
The rooms on both floors provide an interesting and detailed outline of the battles fought during Oman’s military history and information about Oman’s international relations.
In the grounds sits an assortment of military vehicles including helicopters, planes, boats and rough terrain vehicles and in addition, a Cadillac fitted with bullet proof glass – the first car owned by Sultan Qaboos bin Said when he came into power.
A military representative will escort you around the museum, which also includes a military hospital and a wartime field headquarters.
