FAQs

We at My Guide Oman have put together a list of the most commonly asked questions about Oman. If you feel there is something worth adding, please feel free to contact us.

I am keen to explore Oman’s desert terrain in a 4x4. Is there anything I should know before I go off-roading?

Ensure that you are insured! Do not venture out alone; travel preferably in a convoy of at least two cars. Carry a fully charged mobile phone, first aid kit and a good supply of water. Your vehicle should be well maintained and serviced and contain basic safety equipment like a fire extinguisher, shovel, towrope, jack, spare tyre and a plank of wood to support the jack on the sand. Before you set off, advise people of your route, and itinerary so that the alarm can be raised if you fail to make contact.

I plan to experience the wadis and mountains on foot. How should I prepare for my trip?

Firstly, wear appropriate clothing including a hat and sturdy walking shoes. Long sleeved shirts and long trousers will help protect you from the sun but a high factor sunscreen is also essential. Pack your rucksack with plenty of water, some food, a first aid kit and a fully charged mobile phone. Do not go climbing alone and make people aware of your itinerary. Be cautions of flora and fauna as some species may be dangerous.

My visit to Oman coincides with Ramadan. How will this affect my holiday?

Many things change during Ramadan and it is wise to be prepared in order to make the most out of your visit. Muslims are required to abide by certain rules during this holy period and non-Muslims are requested to respect them also. Women especially should wear more conservative clothing; ensure shoulders and knees are covered (although this is standard dress code in Oman anyway). Eating, drinking, smoking and chewing gum in public is forbidden. Working hours are reduced and shops have different opening times.

  Is Oman smoke-free?

Indoor restaurants and cafés, shopping centres and other public places are now smoke-free. Smokers may still light up outside and in shisha establishments.

What are the electrical specifications in use in Oman?

The electricity supply in Oman is 220/240 volts and 50 cycles. The socket is the British three-pin type. Some appliances bought in Oman are fitted with a two-pin plug, so require an adapter.

How can I access my money in Oman?

Banks are located in all the major shopping areas and ATMs are dotted around the city including hotels and supermarkets.

How is Oman’s climate different from winter to summer?

Winter in Oman is beautiful; Clear sunny skies but without the harsh summer sun and sticky humidity of summer. You will still require to wear sunscreen when out and about but the evenings are wonderfully cool and perfect for dining alfresco! Summer holidays in Oman are safest with sunscreen, long, loose clothing, hats and plenty of water. In addition, avoid the midday sun if possible.   What is the best time to visit Oman?

Oman’s climate is generally the most pleasurable in winter, however the khareef (monsoon) season in late summer is the ideal time to visit Salalah in the South of Oman.

Do I need to be vaccinated before I travel to Oman?

You should contact your local healthcare provider for advice as soon as you plan your trip, as some vaccinations are part of a course. Although winter brings mosquitoes, Malaria medication is not normally necessary; mosquito repellent and long sleeved clothing should be sufficient.

I have only got a short time in Oman. What are the most important sights to see?

A visit to Oman is not complete without a trip to Muttrah corniche and a wander around the ancient souq. A dolphin watching trip on a boat is beautiful and a dive round the islands and reefs is unforgettable. The Grand Mosque will leave you breathless, as will dune bashing on the Wahiba Sands. And a camel ride will provide the perfect souvenir photo opportunity!

Where can I camp in Oman?

You can camp on beaches, in the mountains or the desert. However, you should never attempt to camp or picnic in a dry wadi; it could fill up with water very quickly if there is a sudden rain shower up in the mountains. Check the weather forecast before you set off on your camping trip.
