Since the school opened in 1987, it has undergone considerable expansion and development, including a major building program. It occupies a visually dramatic site at the foot of a range of mountains bordering a wadi, yet it is high enough to command a view of the surrounding dunes, and in the distance, the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Oman. The school occupies a 25,000 square meter campus, including a sports complex and fields, tennis courts, a 25-meter pool, computer labs, science labs, Design and Technology (DT), Early Childhood and Elementary Centre and a Performing Arts Centre. Designed to blend with their surroundings, the modern, well-equipped and efficiently air-conditioned buildings provide an attractive learning environment.

ABA has an international curriculum framework inspired by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, which encompasses grades from the Primary Years through to the High School level. The IB Primary Years Program is the basis for the curriculum in the Elementary School. The IB Middle Years Program strongly influences the curriculum structure and teaching goals in Grades 6-8.
